Then consider

- Asymptomatic transmission

- Air transmission

- Tests can be unreliable in small children

- Packed classrooms, hallways & buses

- Ongoing community transmission and **escalating community transmission**

As I have been hearing from my teacher friends, I am heartbroken at their resignation to face infection and possible death

They have no choice but to make the best of these very dangerous conditions & teach/care for children.

They just hope no one will be harmed.

The virus doesn't care about our hope.

We know that COVID can cause brain damage, and even in mild cases, it can cause serious permanent heart damage.

We are knowingly putting people in harm's way, and the consequences could be devastating.

This return to school plan is immoral.

With what we know now about COVID damage, it is no longer ok to tolerate cases.

Tolerating cases doesn't work, anyway.

It’s like letting embers of a forest fire burn, which create inevitable hard to manage outbreak fires.

The virus must be effectively suppressed

This does NOT mean lock down until there is a vaccine. This is a false dichotomy.

There is a smarter way

There are zones in AB that are ready to open (no new cases for 14 days)

In fact, there are whole provinces ready to open
7/

Start at the micro/community level, and work outward. Use AHS’s zone map.

Get to green--no more new cases for 14 days.

It takes 4-6 weeks.

Then protect your zone. Read the green zone strategy carefully and understand how to travel between zones. https://www.endcoronavirus.org/green-zones
It requires communities to help each other and collaborate with neighboring zones.

Organizing at the school level in parent councils would be a great place to start.

You can even gamify getting to green!

Mayors can challenge zones in their city/town and other jurisdictions!

It's not easy, but it works. It resolved Ebola in Africa.

There will still be outbreaks because the virus is still with us.

But with strong fast action, a zone can relatively quickly get back to green.

It's challenging, but losing people to the virus is heartbreaking.
9/

And it's positive. It gives us something to work toward, together!

And the best part...we don't have to wait for our government that never listens and doesn’t care.

We can start it ourselves.
10/

The world is already learning that tolerating cases does not work.

The lesson will become very painful this fall and winter.

There is no living WITH this virus, and it is unnecessary to try.

AB has everything it needs to do this!
15/

Notice the provinces that are green.

Then notice the red, orange and yellow in AB and BC. Tolerating cases doesn't work. https://www.endcoronavirus.org/canada-map

This is from July 14th

Why is AB disregarding this?

Let's not play whack-a-mole with our children or any other part of our society.

We aren't safe unless we're ALL safe. Let's stop tolerating cases and put the embers out.
