been saying this for months, but especially as the pandemic stretches on without a real end in sight... #GoodEnoughPhD is a convo universities neeeeed to be having. https://twitter.com/H_Wohl/status/1301223369795424256
bc I'm a grad student, I was coming at it from that angle — that with library & archive access dramatically restricted, travel on hold, fieldwork hanging in the balance, we need to think diff about what dissertations look like. but the same is true for TT fac & tenure, I think.
the response I heard in the spring is that there's no clear way to recalibrate tenure expectations, whereas tenure clock extensions are clear-cut. but they're also (clearly!!) totally insufficient to address the ongoing challenges faculty are facing!
as with so much, I think we could've saved a lot of pain if we'd been willing, earlier, to accept that this was going to be an extended disruption to our standard operating procedure, and had planned accordingly. instead we're just...still expecting people to plow through? yikes.
I get that this isn't an easy convo, it's likely to be messy AF, and everyone is already overextended. but I honestly think figuring out a way to recalibrate expectations is a more equitable + sustainable path forward than clock extensions. https://twitter.com/polumechanos/status/1240996031027961857?s=20
