"let's prove to the world that volleyball is interesting" is honestly one of the most the most important lines in haikyuu as it thematically encapsulates the entirety of the series and the message that furudate wants to leave behind.
the rules itself are interesting. "two teams separated by a net bounce a ball back and forth each other. the ball is not allowed to touch the floor, and it cannot be carried. a team has no more than three touches to connect."
the mystery on how triumph will arise from these rules makes volleyball an exciting sport to watch. moreover, furudate carefully crafts narratives throughout the series that educate the audiences about these rules and the strategies and analyses that fit well within them.
because of these factors, each match will yield different game plays and different results. no match is a guaranteed victory, which makes the sport all the more interesting as people anticipate what happens next.
but beyond the interesting rules and results lie the players who take up the challenge presented to them. these people provide their own stories- their achievements, their failures, their thoughts, their hopes, their despair. no individual is completely the same.
it is this uniqueness that gives diversity, and in diversity, we get the interesting.
teams of people with different and unique abilities are formed. they play against other teams with their own set of unique abilities. the individuality and the combination of these players welcome curiosity in the audience as they wonder how games will play out.
one example of this concept is in the partnership and rivalry of kageyama and hinata. their own unique skills make for a fearsome combination that forces caution on their enemies. however, it's also when they play against each other that makes for an intriguing match.
aside from the main duo, furudate also weaves uniqueness in each team that was introduced. between each team's matches, the audience find themselves rooting for a team that they resonate with, and that charm is largely due to furudate's meticulous writing.
by showcasing the uniqueness between individuals and between teams along with the explanation of the rules and strategies, furudate declares that there is more to the sport besides the mere exchanges of the ball across the net.
volleyball IS interesting. through haikyuu, furudate has proven exactly that.
