Reading Ted Chiang’s “Understand” last night made me realize what was missing in Neuralink's demo: aesthetics
There’s nothing more beautiful than achieving a higher form of intelligence -- one can see the world in a different dimension, comprehend new emotions, create languages that transcend limitations. A few quotes to illustrate that possible future:
“No matter what I study, I can see the patterns. I see the gestalt, the melody within the notes, in everything: mathematics and science, art and music, psychology and sociology”
“I’m aware of many emotions beyond those of normal humans; I see how limited their affective range is”
“I know my mind in terms of a language more expressive than any I'd previously imagined. Like God creating order from chaos with an utterance, I make myself anew with this language”
Ordering a Tesla telepathically or saving my memories would be really cool, but I doubt that would entice people to have a chip in their brains besides clinical purpose.
But to be able to express yourself beyond limitations of current languages, create arts that make your heart sing, or get closer to enlightenment? That’s the future that inspire
I kept coming back to this thread, and it’s becoming truer every day. We need people to fall in love with the future to build, and for that we need better aesthetics https://twitter.com/nwilliams030/status/1184914211731918848
