If CJ Spiller was the spark that ignited Clemson's current dynasty, then Tajh Boyd was the one who turned that spark into a wildfire, elevating the Tigers to the national powerhouse they are today. Boyd, who started 40 straight games at QB, led the Tigers to a record 32 wins.
While the QBs who have come after him have had a bigger national spotlight, nobody in Clemson will forget that it was Tajh who first took the Tigers to new heights. Boyd, the first Clemson QB to win ACC PotY since Steve Fuller, broke nearly every school passing record in the book
After getting significant snaps behind Kyle Parker as a freshman, Boyd took up the starting role in 2011 and began a run that would see him finish his career as the best Clemson QB of all-time at that point and one of the best in ACC history.
In his first season as a starter, Boyd broke the school single-season records for completions, passing yards, passing TDs, & total offense. He was named 1st-Team All-ACC and helped Clemson capture their 1st conference title in 20 years, earning ACCCG MVP after scoring 4 total TDs
The jubilation of a 1st ACC title in decades & 1st ever BCS Bowl was short-lived after Clemson suffered an embarrassing loss to W. Virginia in the Orange Bowl. It looked like the Mountaineers had derailed the momentum Clemson was building, but Boyd made sure that wasn't the case.
In 2012, Tajh and the Tigers came roaring back, recording their first 10-win regular season since 1981. Boyd was named the ACC's Player of the Year and a 1st-Team All-American after his ACC record 46 total touchdowns, including an ACC single-game record of 8 against NC State.
The incredible season earned a date with LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, where Boyd had one of his most memorable games in a Clemson uniform. In an extremely physical contest, Boyd put up 372 total yards & 3 TDs, including a legendary 4th & 16 conversion to set up a game-winning FG.
Fresh off the first 11-win season in 31 years, Boyd had a decision to make, leave school for an NFL dream, or return to Clemson to elevate his legacy even higher. Tajh chose to come back for his senior year, having already broken 51 school records, but there was more to be done.
In 2013, Boyd led the Tigers to a second straight 10-2 regular season and Clemson’s first win over Georgia since 1990. He threw for another 3,851 yards and 34 TDs, giving him 3,000+ yards and 30+ TDs for the 3rd year, still the only Clemson QB to accomplish that.
Clemson earned an at-large BCS bid in the Orange Bowl, the site of their embarrassing loss 2 years prior. For the first time since that game, Dabo Swinney let the team wear their orange britches against an Ohio State team that had fallen just short of the national title game
In his final collegiate game, Boyd lit up the Buckeyes for 505 total yards & 6 TDs, including a 48-yard score on the first drive, leading the Tigers to a 40-35 win. It remains the only game Ohio State has ever lost when scoring 35 or more points.
Boyd, the first Tiger QB ever to be a 1st-Team All-American, graduated with 57 records, including the ACC's all-time record in passing and total TDs, Clemson's all-time record in wins as a QB, total offense, passing yards, completions, 200 & 300 yd. passing games, & top 25 wins.
While some feats have been eclipsed by the title winning QBs that followed him, Boyd still holds most of Clemson's career QB records and is still the ACC's passing & total TD leader. Clemson wouldn't be where it is today without the contributions of one of its all-time greats.
