So today Miley Cyrus went on the world’s biggest podcast to say that she needed to start eating fish to get “omegas”.

Vegan or not, you should be mad about scientific misinformation being spread to millions.

Here’s an actually *scientifically correct* thread about omegas.
DISCLAIMER: I’m not a doctor or a dietician, I’m just a medical student so this isn’t official medical advice and shouldn’t be taken as such
First off... what does she mean by “omegas”? Omega 6? Omega 3? DHA? ALA? EPA? Let’s not even get into how INCREDIBLY unprofessional it is to talk to millions about “omegas” like you’re stating facts and not even do any research into what omegas you’re talking about but MOVING ON
Omega-6: These are essential fatty acids. They are super easy to obtain compared to other omegas as they’re found commonly in vegetable oils used in cooking, as well as in nuts and seeds!
ALA: This is the essential form of omega-3. It’s found in plant oils, nuts and seeds, like omega 6. It is converted into other forms of omega-3 in the liver at a rate of around 15%, which is quite low. This low conversion rate is the common argument for eating oily fish.
DHA/EPA: these are the non-essential omega-3s produced by ALA. It’s reasonably easy to overcome the low conversation rate while vegan, simply by eating a good amount of nuts, seeds and oils per day to make sure you’re getting a super high amount of ALA, or...
A more reliable way is to consume extra DHA and EPA directly about every other day. “B-But that means you need to eat fish!!?”... nope. Miley Cyrus might’ve fallen for that myth, but where do the fish get THEIR omega-3 from? The answer is algae.
Algae is a vegan source of DHA and EPA which can be taken in the form of algae oil tablets in order to ensure you’re reaching your requirements. I often get mine off ebay, I got an 8 months supply (120 tablets) for £20 on ebay, meaning they cost around 0.08p each.
I understand there are people who are much less fortunate than me, and even though 60p a week might not sound a lot to me, it can be huge to people and families that are struggling. I appreciate not everyone can afford supplements every week and that may be a barrier to veganism.
However, Miley Cyrus is NOT one of those people. She’s a multimillionaire and she could easily buy even a lifetime supply of algae oil in one go and not bat and eyelid. The DHA in algae oil and the DHA in fish is chemically and medically the same. No differences.
Her deciding privately to eat fish, even if she doesn’t need to, is one thing. Telling millions of her young, impressionable fans that they NEED to harm animals and the planet in order to get a nutrient that can actually be found elsewhere is just plain wrong.
I wrote most of this from my brain lol but here’s a good source. Plus if you scroll down to supplements it actually says that vegan algae oil contains about 100-300mg of DHA on average but cod liver oil contains about 120mg!!! https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Omega3FattyAcids-HealthProfessional/
CORRECTION: my tablets are 8p each and would, therefore, cost around 28p per week. It’s 1AM in the UK and I got my decimal places wrong ok I’m sorry😅😅
