Zenitsu Agatsuma's character analysis and understanding his character framework- A (VERY long) thread plus contains kny manga spoilers. Also part 1 of me talking about him today cause he a bday boy!
Zenitsu Agatsuma, his given name means "goodness" and his surname means "my wife". His design contains tons of lightning motifs due to him being a user of the breath of thunder, from his eyebrow shape to his sword design, to him being colour coded as yellow, often used to depict
lightning as besides the colours blue and violet sometimes (discussed later in detail). His haori is a design of a yellow to orange gradient with white triangular shapes remniscent of his sharp and fast and precise fighting style. The haori is also a keepsake from his master too.
Besides his really clever and interesting design (which to be honest most of the KnY charas have a cut above designs) his personality is also frankly speaking, is a very good example of being a "cowardly lion" trope so to speak. Zenitsu Agatsuma is a coward. He says it himself.
He acts cowardly, getting scared often when thinking of the prospect of having to combat demons. His introduction, in a similar manner to Inosuke, was a very unlikable first impression for not only us the audience, but Tanjiro as well, showing a very disgusted face minutes after.
One thing which I often found appreciating is the fact how unlikable most of the characters in this series were during their first introduction, whether its him and and Inosuke, or whether its the Pillars and others. It was a very consistent type of introduction used throughout.
Zenitsu after several appearances and finally getting to explore his backstory in the Natagumo Mountain arc, many of us started to appreciate how so many of his struggles are very relatable at core. How he struggles to put effort into doing better, how he wants to change,
because Zenitsu was not happy with the way he was. He knew that he was a coward, he was aware of his own weaknesses and wanted to change. He didn't even realize that that became his very strength. Realizing your weaknesses and turning that into your greatest strength is one of
the core lessons that is taught through Zenitsu's character. It is something that extends even to his skillset, as he is unable to use any other styles of the thunder breathing besides the first style Thunderclap and Flash. He became a swordsman who is unable to use the other 5
styles of the thunder breathing, and because of that weakness, he was able to master the first style, and honed to beyond perfection, so much that he also developed levels of the amount of power in a single first style slash.
Which also brings back one of the centric themes of the series, "The weakest people are the ones who have the most potential". This is a theme that lines through almost every character who are usually set up as the disadvantaged, the biggest example is Genya himself.
Besides him, most of the main non-pillar characters have proved this more than once as well. Zenitsu too, all of his fights have had put him in a disadvantaged situation in which he had to act in a different way so to surprise his opponents.
Zenitsu is a person who is very much critical of himself. That also shines through his personality as well to the point he's the "realistic" part of the main Kamaboko squad. Since he was an orphan early into his life he never had a place of security where he feels like he belongs
to. This also in turn made him into a very pessimistic person which also led to him becoming more cowardly overall. And while he found a relationship that he could finally treasure with his master or jii-chan, he also found himself to have an unhealthy brotherhood with Kaigaku.
Bringing back the lighting point, its interesting to note that yellow lightning is said to be occur due to the high level of concentration of dust in the air, in other words, its said to occur during a dry thunderstorm with low levels of air moisture.
Blue lightnings on the other hand seem to occur when there is a chance of hail, blue lightning is often an indication of a high precipitation storm coming therefore it is also in a direct contrast of the dry yellow lightning.
The dry yellow lightning is of course, Zenitsu. In contrast, the blue lightning was presented in the form of Kaigaku, who was also the former pupil of Jigoro.
Albeit Kaigaku's limited presence throughout, the careful and delicate foiling between him and Zenitsu is very much a significant part of understandibg Zenitsu's character. The two of them are very much similar in a lot of aspects, but Zenitsu would've most likely ended up
in the same place as Kaigaku had he not closed the box of happiness in his heart as Zenitsu himself puts it. Zenitsu despite the number of struggles he had to go through managed to face his weaknesses head on and turn it to his strength.
Zenitsu is a coward. Or so he thinks. However what we've seen from his actions it has always said otherwise. He wanted to become a great and strong demon slayer for his jii-chan, the man he owes his life to. Zenitsu is not a coward. Because he wishes to protect his loved ones.
And seeing how Kaigaku despite having a similar background as him, that also poses a question on who exactly was the real coward. The moment Zenitsu revealed to have created a seventh new style it was that moment where his character arc reached full circle.
Zenitsu managed to create a whole new style of thunder breathing which required him to practice dedicately and loyally, to the point that all of his feelings in regards to jii-chan and his friends were embodied in that said style. The Flaming Thunder God.
Zenitsu is a coward. He says it himself. He wanted to become a Pillar while jii-chan's was alive. He wasn't able to. But despite all that he was a son that jii-chan was proud of, so much that he says that Zenitsu.
