Interested in research during Neuro residency? #NeuroTwitter @nmatch2021

One option is @nindsfunding R25! It provides 6-9 contiguous months in residency & time in fellowship. Its general goal is to create a smooth path from residency https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="➡️" title="Pfeil nach rechts" aria-label="Emoji: Pfeil nach rechts"> fellowship https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="➡️" title="Pfeil nach rechts" aria-label="Emoji: Pfeil nach rechts"> K https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="➡️" title="Pfeil nach rechts" aria-label="Emoji: Pfeil nach rechts"> R01!

A #tweetorial.
What R25 gets you at @UCLANeurology:

6 contiguous months of 80% research time during PGY4, attendance at the R25 national conference (Increment 1). 20% clinical time includes ½ day continuity clinic, ½ day didactics, and sporadic weekend night float/back-up call.
Residency time is valuable, but fellowship time is the crux of the award. Increment 2 provides 9-12 months of 80% research time during fellowship. Increment 3 is 12 more months of 80% research time during a 2nd fellowship yr & requires K-award application: https://www.ninds.nih.gov/sites/default/files/NINDS_R25_for_Residents_and_Fellows_guidance_August_2017_508C_2.pdf">https://www.ninds.nih.gov/sites/def...
Each increment requires an application in the October prior to the year of the award. Most people do fellowship at the same institution but, yes, you can move from R25 institution to R25 institution. @wesleytkerr is! @UCLANeurology to @UMneurosciences.
Certain institutions have NIH R25 grants. Each site has one spot that they can endorse for funding. Additional spots are nationally competitive supplements. Make sure it’s Neurology instead of NSGY that has the grant: https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Funding/Training-Career-Awards/Institutional-Awards/R25-Awardees">https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Funding/T...
Your mentors, Dr. Carmichael, and other faculty weigh in to make every application as good as it can be. We do #teamscience! Every application is nationally reviewed and, if not good enough, can be not funded. This is true at every R25 institution.
@UCLANeurology has one of those R25 spots. In most years, we’ve had 1-2 R25 funded spots (max 3!) and most people who apply are given the 6 months during PGY4 even if not awarded from NIH. This year: 2 funded spots and 3 people were given time.
The @UCLANeurology residents with that time: Anthony Linares, Daniel Okobi, and myself ( @wesleytkerr).

Last year: Bobby Chong (UCLA Neuro-Onc Fellow). Year prior: Katherine Cross (UCLA Movement Fellow), Victoria Ho (UCLA Neurophys/Epilepsy Fellow).

Past R25 awardees already are young faculty at @UCLANeurology including Ahmet Arac ( @aarac_neuro), Ranmal Samarasinghe, Tim Chang ( @timschang), & Will Zeiger ( @ZeigerLab). Also, a little farther past includes @HinmanLabUCLA.
