I’m obviously pretty passionate about equity and inclusion everywhere but especially in the investment industry. Most folks are getting it but over and over highly flawed excuses keep coming up - a thread:
‘We should only hire the most qualified’ - main problem with this is missing the entire point of structural problems but also that most investment pros don’t outperform in the long run
‘Women don’t like math’ - bullshit
‘Only x applied for the role’ - then repost it, build your damn network, and be a little innovative
‘Setting quotas is not good’ - well not setting goals and targets is also pretty shitty but you do you
‘It’s not a role X is interested in’ - again total BS
There are lots more but these come up regularly. There are a lot of reasons why we don’t have diverse representing in investing but none of these are them. It has a lot more to do with our hiring and promotions process and our strong bias in the process.
It is also because the industry looks kind of mean and purposeless from the outside. Both we can change.
