I love Green Day and I love Billie Joe but I need to say this... This is probably going to have to be a thread... So... 1/? https://twitter.com/billiejoe/status/1301252923523887104
Green Day played a serious role in the way I viewed politics. I was wearing heart grenade shirts and American Idiot hoodies through out my high school years under the Bush administration. 2/?
Literally the MOMENT Trump came into office I made a tweet. I'll attempt to find it later and bring it forward but the long and short of it was "I can't wait for the Green Day album to come out of this" 3/?
Green Day took their time and eventually announced a new album last year. They specifically stated that the album would not be political and not take any stances. 4/?
I was destroyed. The Bush administration inspired American Idiot but the Trump administration inspired passifism in them? This is disgusting. If ever there was a time to speak to the points American Idiot brought to the forefront it was now and Green Day literally ignored it
I think the moment when this killed me was when I mentioned to my Trump supporting family that Green Day was coming out with a new album. They were old Green Day fans but didn't want politics in 2019/2020in their music. I advised it wouldn't not be political and they were RELIVED
That's when I realized that I lost what had originally motivated me. What made me want to stand up for what I perceived was right. Green Day had a chance to step up and use their popularity to bring people into the reality of this world we live in. But they didn't. By choice.
I don't know if rock is dead or common sense is dead. Maybe it's everything. All I know is that this effort from Green Day feels like a missed target. You want people to care? Sing about it. The protest songs of the 60s are still sung today. Why not be one of them? End thread.
