Genuinely asking: what are the ways in which the US has updated/adjusted/or changed a fundamental political institution that shape its “democratic republic”(thinking electoral college, 2 senators/state, reps/state) after say the Voting Rights Act (which I’d say isn’t even
Transforming the way that people shape and participate in government, especially now after Supreme Court ruling in 2013)?
Also thinking about the tension of the belief in the superiority / productivity in political thought & practice of a 2 party system and love this tweet & want to dig into this political party framework (I’ve wanted multiparty democracy since I started studying poli sci) https://twitter.com/jbouie/status/1299411308018896897
I also believe that dominant class (white, rich, property owning, male) power & politics has entrenched the US’ democratic norms mentioned above, but I ask these questions because I do think this thread’s assertion are important, not far off. https://twitter.com/jbouie/status/1299346165738229760
Put differently, I think the greatest ideological pushes for more politically representative and participatory institutions have come from abolition of state violence / carceral system, anarchist, Black feminist, Marxist & communist work.
