One thing we don't talk about enough in terms of public access to information: court transcripts. Just got the quote from a court reporter for the transcript of a 2010 murder trial. $12,000
Relatively high compared to other trial transcripts I've gotten, but I typically expect to be writing a check for about $1k if I need a murder trial transcript (and can't find it in the appeals docket/get someone to leak it to me).
Not the fault of the court reporters - they didn't invent this system. But seems wrong that it's cost prohibitive for the average American to know/learn what happens in "open" court
