Can we just admit that Nolan makes bad choices when it comes to the mix?
Here&
#39;s the thing that becomes maddening in filmmaking -- there&
#39;s no real right or wrong way to do something, as long as you get there, and it becomes really easy in a dark room to mistake bad choices for bold choices.
I&
#39;m not unsympathetic either. When I&
#39;m temp scoring, it&
#39;s not uncommon for me to discover I have the music up way too high because that&
#39;s where the emotion is felt and I really want the viewer to feel the emotion with as much intensity as I can deliver.
I&
#39;ve also been the person in the middle between the director and their bad choices and the gear that would make it happen. I&
#39;ll explain why they might want to rethink their choice and if they persist, I&
#39;ll respect that and let them live with results. After all, it&
#39;s their film.
