Can we just admit that Nolan makes bad choices when it comes to the mix?
Here's the thing that becomes maddening in filmmaking -- there's no real right or wrong way to do something, as long as you get there, and it becomes really easy in a dark room to mistake bad choices for bold choices.
I'm not unsympathetic either. When I'm temp scoring, it's not uncommon for me to discover I have the music up way too high because that's where the emotion is felt and I really want the viewer to feel the emotion with as much intensity as I can deliver.
I've also been the person in the middle between the director and their bad choices and the gear that would make it happen. I'll explain why they might want to rethink their choice and if they persist, I'll respect that and let them live with results. After all, it's their film.
