Hi, all. We’ve been having conversations, listening to our community and thinking about what we stand for and how we can improve our newsroom.

One thing we know is that racism isn't an opinion. It should not be excused, and it has no place at the Miami Herald + el Nuevo Herald.
We have listened to you all and we are listening to each other. Our newsroom embodies the conflicts, tensions and ideological differences reflected in our community. But let us be clear: We are unified in rejecting racism.
Many of us have expressed our disappointment in the initial response from our management to remarks that ignore the reality of racism, and we appreciate the subsequent apology and recognition that harm was caused. This is a painful moment, but we will heal together.
One Herald Guild has invited the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald management to work with us to establish a framework for the resolution of any future conflict. The Herald must be a place where Black journalists feel supported and readers know where we stand.
We know it’s not going to be easy, but we are encouraged that so many in our newsroom value the fact that unity of purpose will help us serve our community as this nation works to eradicate racism.
Among our proposals, we’re asking management to create a framework for the resolution of future conflicts by immediately adopting, in the form of a memo of understanding, a comprehensive anti-racism policy that repairs harm through deliberate conversation & thoughtful education.
Journalists of color at the Herald have fought for years to better our newsrooms. Those efforts are a foundation for what we will keep building. Employees and managers will work harder to gain our readers’ trust by being consistent with the principles our publications value.
Our community needs to see progress in our work and deserves to hear how we will transform this institution. We plan to keep you informed on our efforts.
One Herald Guild is committed to working with management to dismantle racism in our newsroom and to cover South Florida in a way that is more empathetic, accurate and fair.
To our valued readers, we ask for your feedback, your suggestions, your wisdom and your patience. One Herald Guild was formed to help make our newsroom stronger. Stay with us.
