Glad to see this is receiving the attention it warrants because this bigotry has to be called out from wherever it emanates. Let’s break this down. White supremacy— and the violent hate crimes committed by its adherents—are surging in this country. https://www.splcenter.org/news/2020/03/18/year-hate-and-extremism-2019 https://twitter.com/MuslimAdvocates/status/1300909976286830598
We r all targets of white supremacy, incl. Muslims & Arabs. One difference is sometimes anti-Muslim or anti-Arab bigotry is not condemned same way but rather viewed through a securitized lens where citing acts of terrorism allows vastly different leeway to be taken w/ language.
In an attempt to make a point, @JoyAnnReid resorted to anti-Muslim tropes that fuel anti-Muslim bigotry. People “willing to commit violence, including on their own bodies” are not called “Muslim leaders” and this is not how “Muslims act.” Period.
We stand with @MuslimAdvoctes in seeking an apology—and more importantly, a dialogue—to address the underlying bias or misunderstanding inherent in this narrative.
We are familiar with “radicalization” narratives of the world in a cultural war with Arabs and Muslims cast as the existential other.
From the Huntington frame to Netanyahu deploying it to erase Israel’s brutal occupation of Palestine by trying to conflate legitimate opposition to occupation with terrorism & casting it as the “same radical Islam.” This is a key context for this bigotry. https://www.timesofisrael.com/palestinians-dismiss-pms-linkage-of-palestinian-global-terrorism/
There is another context for what is now playing out. Some of the most prominent voices of white supremacy in America today are now weighing in to condemn anti-Muslim bigotry as if they are not its chief traffickers.
No thank you. Your attempt to go after @JoyAnnReid, a Black woman in primetime, is transparent and we wholly reject the anti-Blackness rooted in your faux “solidarity.”
The path forward starts w/an apology & must continue with a dialogue to address the underlying issues @MSNBC. We are grateful to our partners @MuslimAdvocates for raising this & to @JoyAnnReid for sharing she will be addressing the issue on her show today. Let’s start there.
