On September 2nd, 1838, Lydia Kamakaeha, who later became known as Queen Lili'uokalani was born. An avid songwriter, Lili'uokalani was known for her dignity and grace, ruling as Hawai'i's last sovereign monarch after the death of her brother, King Kalākaua, on January 20,1891.
Queen Lili'uokalani exemplified what it means to be Hawaiian. In January of 1893, in the face of the forced establishment of a provisional government by the Missionary Party, Queen Lili'uokalani abdicated her throne to avoid Hawaiian bloodshed.
She later passed in 1917 after years of trying to regain control of the Hawaiian Crown Lands.
Today, we are left with more than just memories of this incredible monarch. Her song "Aloha 'Oe," a song inspired by a farewell embrace between two lovers, is a world-renown cultural symbol of Hawai'i.
The Queen Lili'uokalani Trust was also established in 1909 to provide resources for orphan and destitute Native Hawaiian children in need.
