/6: So, thinking of the #CastleFalkenstein game last night and I realized one of my favorite things to ever happen in an RPG happened. Kind of a story element, but mostly had to do with it& #39;s mechanics.
/6: For those unaware, Castle Falkenstein does not use any dice. The game relies on a series of abilities which you may be great/good/poor at, which have number values attached to them which are then augmented by playing cards from your hand.
/6: We are using a Tarot card variant which adds in the Major Arcana & is a lot of fun. Anyway, (without spoilers) there was a moment last night where I was standing opposite a handful of henchmen. I was primed to Red Dead Redemption them all dead, & asked a simple question:
/6: "What kind of success do I need to terminate all of these henchmen in one round?" Our host (the masterly @sirlarkins) let me know, & that& #39;s when I examined my hand. I had some good cards in there, but even playing my best, David might have something better. At that point -
/6: We were gambling. I was betting my hand was better than David& #39;s. I was sure that in one round, my cards would let me execute X number of bad guys, and that whatever David had wasn& #39;t good enough to make much of a difference.
/6: It gave me an entirely new perspective on the mechanics of the game. We& #39;re playing poker, with some storytelling bits added in, and it& #39;s so interesting and unique from every game I& #39;ve ever played (or seen!). Can& #39;t wait for next week!
