Have it happen 5000 years ago. A young orphan living a hard life discovers he’s the Avatar, and after his training, he meets an Airbender that teaches him how to bring peace amidst a war. Only for one of the nations to attempt to assassinate him accidentally kills his loved one.

So this young powerful, unbelievably skilled Avatar abandons his role and in a pure red rage, he lays waste to the thousands of soldiers.

The entire world now fears him, so he erects the walls of his Kingdom, creating Ba Sing Se.

The other nations come together to take him on, with the Avatar ready to conjure the most powerful hurricane in history that covers half the world.

The previous Avatars try pleading with him, even Wan and Raava, to no avail.

Right when he’s about to destroy half the world in a rage, his previous Avatars cut him off from the Avatar state and rip his spirit out and lock him away in a spiritual prison, separate from the Avatar connection.

The previous Avatars didn’t want him connected to any future ones.

5000 years later, the cycle has been broken. His prison is now open. He slowly starts to try to control the current Avatar, showing up as dark manifestation. Eventually his rage affects her own actions.

It gets to the point where he possesses Korra and team Avatar try to stop him, but they fail.

In their second attempt to split his spirit from Korra, using Jinora’s special skills, they accidentally give him new life. Now there are two Avatars. His connection to Raava remains.

This would be Korra’s final and greatest battle. Eventually she helps pull him back into the light, and in doing so, she brings back the connection to the previous Avatars. There would even be team Avatar deaths.

There’s my pitch for an extra two seasons for Legend of Korra and a third Avatar cycle show.

By the way, all this would happen as Korra continuation. Another consequence of Unalaq severing her connection to past Avatars.

They were keeping the Avatar prison together. They’re gone, so now he’s free.

Oh, and because his time as an Avatar was somewhere between 4000-5000 years ago, his Airbending teacher could be Guru Laghima, the flying air bending master Zaheer was obsessed with.
