Since people are talking about Portland being constantly on fire and under siege, I thought it would be nice to post a thread taking you on a tour of the many amazing murals artists have painted in recent months all over downtown Portland’s boarded-up businesses.
I caught artist Amaranta (AKA Curlieturtle) at work.
These memorial murals to Claudette Colvin and John Lewis are by Mario de Leon and Lissa Jensen.
This collaborative mural stretches around an entire city block. It’s a project by Open Eye Art, Color Outside the Lines, and NAYA.
Mural panels from the Expression Without Oppression project. Art here is by Kavita Hudson, Robert McKizzie, Boramie A. Sao, Laura Camila Medina, and several unnamed artists.
A few favorite murals from Ankeny Alley by artists Breaker, Plasticbirdie, Spooky, Sean Lambert, and Practice.
This three-part memorial mural is installed at Mother’s restaurant. Art by Xochilt Ruvalcaba.
Powerful memorial mural in Old Town by Tristan “TK” Irving.
Murals by Salomée, Alex Chiu, Davey Barnwell, and one where I don’t know the artist. Gorgeous work by all.
This huge ever-evolving mural covers the exterior of the Apple store. New work is added every day, but the faces were initially drawn by Flat Rabbit studio.
Window panels by an artists named Eyedrawp and the Lowbrow Lounge transformed by artist Quintero.
I wanted to photograph all these murals because they’re pieces of history — and a reflection of where Portland is at right now, responding to crisis with creativity. Who knows how long these murals will be up, so I wanted to document them while they’re still here. 💕
There are so many more murals around town! Please feel free to reply with your favorites and name the artists if possible. I’ll conclude with the mural at Floating World by Beatriz Pilar, Nina Nguyen, and the Chinatown fam.
The artists named here let me know that they did the panel that says Black Lives Matter (facing NW Couch), but not the other panels. Those panels are unsigned, so I don't know who the artists are! Cool work, though.
