This old song again 🙄the audit would be a giant waste of money. The vast majority of non-profits in the DTES use professional accounting and governance standards, have 3rd party reviews, and are accountable to funders and members and engaged with community. Pointless Witch-hunt. https://twitter.com/steeletalk/status/1300947722573291520
“The problem” with non-profits in the DTES isn’t that they get so much money and the neighbourhood still has very serious challenges, it’s that non-profits in a single neighborhood can’t reasonably be expected to solve societal-scale problems that have been created over decades.
Every level of government has been complicit in displacing people, making lives more precarious, perpetuating systemic racism, and traumatizing them with state-violence, and then people are mad that a cluster of NPOs haven’t miraculously made the DTES into a utopia through grants
A million dollars a day gets you triage in the DTES. It gets uniquely designed services for people who government programs have not been designed with in mind, it gets you a finger in the dam for a society that has macro-social problems at a scale unfathomable to our ancestors.
And lastly, the non-profit sector is a huge employer in BC and in Vancouver. People complaining about $300 million a year going into the DTES, that’s jobs. That’s training. That’s meals and stipends for those who face multiple barriers. That’s rent going to building owners.
This vacant storefronts being filled with social enterprise and community services. That’s an economy. So you can STFU with your stupid audit idea and maybe get involved with the local non-profits you have no idea about.
