To go further—the way the trio functions in these movies doesn’t work. Rey and Finn are friends with each other. Poe and later Rose and FINN’S friends. (Don’t Poe and Rey not like each other in the 9th?) https://twitter.com/storyslug/status/1301181236782694400
BB8 was Poe’s droid. He’s presumed dead. BB8 goes to Rey. But when Poe is found to be alive, BB8 goes back to him.
Kylo is connected to Rey. Some debate whether Kylo was always meant to be redeemable or whether he was the villain—idk. BUT—
Now the balance (hang onto that word) is Poe, BB8, Rose, Finn—Rey—Kylo. Feels unbalanced, no? But if they meant for there to be that symbolism they introduced about dark/light/balance of the force, it would make sense to have a more focused Finn—Rey—Kylo tension—
It even a circle, because Finn was a storm trooper, came from the 1st order, so that tension feels a lot more organic on a friend and romance level. Not to say that side characters of course could be introduced. But if Kylo was a part of the “Trio” albeit a broken part,
(^^weird wording, sorry)
Then that would make so much sense and part of the overarching plot would be to bring him back to where he’s supposed to be!
But if Poe is supposed to be part of the trio.....feels off. They’re not all friends. Rey doesn’t know him. If that was
The OG design, then the balance is Poe—Finn—Rey, and in that setup, it would make sense for FINN to be our major protagonist. But the movie is pretty clear that he’s not?
I don’t know what the conclusion to this should be, other than this wasn’t written well and because of it
No one gets a good arc or story and that’s really sad for every POC that was so excited for Finn (or Poe!) as a way to see themselves in Star Wars or everyone who was so glad to see Rey on screen. It’s just a huge bummer.
(And Rose of course as well. Kelly Marie Tran deserves the world and none of the crap she had to deal with.)
