@PHE_uk have published the STI and chlamydia screening report for England in 2019. So what are the highlights? (Thread)
Rising:
There were 468,342 STI diagnoses in England in 2019, a 5% increase since 2018
There were 7,982 syphilis diagnoses in England in 2019, a 10% increase since 2018
There were 5,311 diagnises of M. genitalium which is a 196% on 2018 but this reflects greater access to testing
Falling:
Genital wart diagnoses in teenagers continue the steep decline observed since 2014, reflecting high coverage in this age group #vaccineswork
The biggest impact of STIs were seen in young people age 15-24, black and minority ethnic people, and men who have sex with men.
For gonorrhea and chlamydia infection the largest increase was in extragenital sites, which may reflect better screening by healthcare providers.
New HIV diagnoses are down in MSM, due to a combination of expanded HIV testing, treatment as prevention ( #uequalsu), and the availability of HIV PrEP.
The National Chlamydia Screening Programme has provided a staggering 1.3 million tests to young people in England in 2019. Assuming one test per person this would be 20% of all young people in England!
Although the overall diagnoses increased to 134,418, the proportion of positive chlamydia tests remains steady at around 10% in this age group.
Woman account for 71% of all tests and 65% of all diagnoses but positivity rates are lower in women than men (9% compared to 12%).
