Previous regionalization approaches generally ignored the within-catchment variability in climate and landscape, did not optimize the model parameters for all catchments jointly, failed to evaluate the performance in independent validation catchments, and had a regional focus.
While our approach represents an important step in the right direction, there are several avenues for improvement: (a) addition of a routing scheme to the modeling chain, so larger catchments can be included;
(b) use of other variables for optimization (e.g., total water storage, soil moisture, evaporation) in addition to streamflow; and (c) further refinement of the transfer equation linking the model parameters to climate and landscape characteristics.
