Great interview with John Boyega , who is commendably truthful. Twitter is already turning it into “he said JJ good, Rian bad” which to me is a huge extrapolation. I feel like he’s more speaking to the entire process of making a franchise that big (1/?) http://bit.ly/JohnBoyegaInterviewGQ
Rey, not Finn, turning out to be the one powerful in the Force in TFA didn’t mean Finn couldn’t still be a key part of the story. But while I like TLJ more than TROS, Finn I feel gets the kernels of something more interesting in the latter (which than fails to pull it together)
If TLJ and TROS had included an arc for Finn both better coming to terms with his stormtrooper past and discovering he does have the Force and the potential to be a Jedi, that would have been awesome. Instead, TROS clumsily jams in these ideas but doesn’t properly cultivate them.
And yes, at the end of the day, we’re back to “this trilogy lacked a cohesive vision” but it’s gonna always linger. And as much as I love TLJ (including, yep, how it continues and evolved Rey and Kylo as characters), I do think there are elements it could have done better with.
I just saw someone note it was weird to split up Poe and Finn’s storylines in TLJ given their obvious chemistry in TFA and I agree. Romance or no romance, this was an onscreen pairing that worked notably well but then it’s not spotlighted in the film at all after Finn wakes up.
I think there is a lot to love in TLJ and I enjoyed TROS (massive warts and all) more than many, but I also agree with Boyega. It’s super complicated and nuanced, involving a juggernaut of a franchise worth billions, but i certainly hope some lessons were learned for the future.
I like that! Though there’s also the version where Rose is with Finn and Poe and her inclusion as a less glamorous “just someone doing my job” Resistance member (which I really like) can echo Finn, who once worked in sanitation… but for the First Order https://twitter.com/Darthpoopsie88/status/1301158165711589376
