LRT: normalizing pronouns on resumes and in sig files/business cards does NOT just help trans and nonbinary people, though that should be enough. It also helps people with names that are not familiar to most white people and people with gender-neutral names.
How many times have you gotten an email or resume from someone named something like Leslie or Robin and not been sure what honorific to use in responding to them? NORMALIZING PRONOUN DECLARATIONS HELPS WITH THAT
And I know so many people with Asian/African/even European names that aren’t Anglo who have dealt with people getting confused about what pronouns to use for them when their only communication has been online.
There are actual hiring studies that show that some recruiters/hirers will just throw out resumes if they can’t tell the person’s pronouns to avoid personal embarrassment, which is, quite frankly, racist.
Normalizing pronoun declarations helps with ALL of that. It is literally taking out what can be quite frankly some humiliating experiences for people whose names aren’t normalized in our culture or gendered in the way people expect names to be.
And if you don’t give a crap about marginalized genders or races there’s an entire generation of white children named Jaden who are going to hit the job market in five years and you are going to need pronoun declarations to know which Jaden you are talking to.
Throwing out someone’s resume because knowing they went to the effort of making it EASIER for YOU means you assume they are a problem child? Is the most backwards and self-defeating thinking a person in a hiring position can have.
Hating trans and nonbinary people so much that you actively uphold a system that demonstrably makes your job harder ALL THE TIME is a weird choice.
