At pre-command course, tactical commanders development program, and maneuver pre-command program, I asked @JimRainey10, @PatDonahoeArmy, & @52ndArmorCmdt for their thoughts on using social media. Here’s a rollup of what they said in 8 tweets.
2/ @JimRainey10
- Be yourself in all you do. Don’t try to be something you’re not.
- Be professional.
- Be there to learn from others. It will be a source of information.
- Use it as a method to solicit feedback.
3/ @JimRainey10
- As BN CDR, be present on social media if you want, but have a member of your team manage the unit social media accounts (it’s a personal choice). This gives added perspective & ensures someone is always staying engaged with the battalion activities and message.
4/ @PatDonahoeArmy
- Be authentic.
- Don’t get into fights on social media. Block when appropriate. Always walk away. You will lose every fight with a troll.
- Interaction from a position of authority can take a lot of steam out of the spinning narrative.
5/ @PatDonahoeArmy
- Use it as an opportunity to expose yourself to opinions and experiences you might not usually come into contact with.
- Tailor your social media involvement to your level of comfort. You can just observe or you can engage, comment, and post.
6/ @PatDonahoeArmy
- It is a telescope into the formation. It lets you see and (if you want to) interact with Soldiers & civilians from across the Army and DoD, including our allies and friends.
- Be purpose-driven in all you do, including social media engagement.
7/ @52ndArmorCmdt
- Be yourself.
- Don’t get angry.
- Don’t dox.
- If you aren’t on social media, someone else will be.
- Whoever is there can control the narrative. Whoever is not cannot.
8/ @52ndArmorCmdt
- Many people are putting concerns and complaints on social media because there’s a break or concern w/ the chain of command.
- Never be scared to talk face to face. If you say it on Twitter, you should also be willing to say it in person.
