Okay, here’s something I’d like to share with the folks here. Please spare a minute or two and be very careful.
Around June, I received a call from an unknown number asking me if I was looking for a job. Unlock had barely kicked in, and people were still being laid off. 1/several
I wondered which media house might be hiring at this point. The caller mentioned a few organisations with, she claimed, had vacancies. The names included the house that currently employs me. I grew suspicious. I realised I hadn’t updated my CV on job portals in a long time, so
so they probably didn’t have the right information about where I was working.
But that’s not what was worrying. The point was, almost all media houses named by the caller had frozen recruitment, many had been laid off. When I mentioned this, the caller said,
“We have backdoor channels”.
I wanted to take the conversation forward and said I was interested. I almost knew what I’d be told next. I was told to “fill up some forms”, pay Rs 3,000 “as felicitation charge” (facilitation, obviously), share some bank details, my home address,
debit card details, etc.
I told the woman she’d be in jail for fraud and disconnected the call. I wondered if I should report the matter to anybody, probably should have. I called up the number later in the evening and found it switched off. The next day it was unreachable.
This was June. A couple of hours ago a friend mentioned a neighbour who had fallen prey to a similar scam module. They have approached police.
Please don’t fall victim to such designs.
Do not believe anyone who says they’d find you a job in the railways/defence, etc., against some money. I know these are extremely rough times and we all need a job, but let not these criminals reap the benefit of your helplessness.
