If I were the Chinese government, I'd start to worry about my relationship to Germany right about now. Things are not going well for the CCP. The centre-left Foreign Minister is taking a tougher stance, the centre-right is starting to put national security above big business https://twitter.com/_randolf_carr_/status/1301107116242096128
The Greens, which might well become part of the next federal government, are likely to put human rights concerns above car sales. Merkel, always reluctant to criticise China, is on her way out. Parliament is becoming restless.
Even the FDP, which is often seen as pro-business, has become more vocal about Chinese human rights abuses recently. And unlike Russia, China doesn't have any "natural allies" in Germany. There's little common history and no comparable cultural affinity
For now, the whole Wandel durch Handel charade is still dominant, but German policy towards China is definitely becoming much more realistic. Will be interesting to see how things develop post-Merkel. If I had to guess, I'd say the Chinese Communist Party probably won't like it
