The core rights to live freely I enjoy today as a gay person (but not yet as HIV+!) are fundamental to the good things we value about Canada.

They stem from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

This document did the most building toward the just society we aspire to be one day.
The Charter has its own inspirational origins in Diefenbaker's Bill of Rights. (FYI: Premier Robarts attempted to make a provincial version of it)

AND the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Together, *these 3 documents are the foundations* for the things Canadians tend to think of as "Canadian values". When we're asked to list good things about Canada.

But these are universal human values that were explicitly defined by the 1948 UN Declaration.

Signed by Canada.
The John MacDonald that mostly just white Canadians demand we honour on place names and in our parks, *made my existence as a gay person punishable by hanging or firing squad*.
That Canada MacDonald birthed, at least for me as a gay person, is incompatible with these 3 documents.

The hate and racism that drove Macdonald's calculated starvation and mass murder of Indigenous nations is also arguably incompatible with those 3 documents.
Then why honour MacDonald as "Canadian"?

The man who mass murdered my people toward extermination as the stated policy objective of the Canadian government?

Can you now see how Indigenous and racialized Canadians might feel when they see him honoured?

WARNING last sentence:
I set a trap to make a point.

I know many white Canadians refuse to see or feel the ugly evil that is Macdonald without a white face as his victim, even a white face who is gay will do.

WHY is that?

That's the racism and hate that flows in the demented minds of white people.
Rejecting and refusing empathy for other humans who suffer because of their skin colour and who they are is a *conscious choice* we make to be cruel and violent.

If MacDonald's only murder victims were masses of white people.

His statues wouldn't be standing today.
And if you noticed, toppling MacDonald in Montreal sparked a certain familiar vicious tone in mass killing monster loyalists.

It was anti-Indigenous but also laden with severe anti-Black racism. Almost overtly as expressed by Kenney and O'Toole.

A uniquely Canadian brew of hate
It's a weird symptom of white Canadian duplicity and sickness that many of us will name and even quote
ideals from these 3 documents as things we view as sacredly core to what Canada is...
While boisterously leaping to defend a racist genocidal tyrant who despised those ideals as sick and unclean because unclean people must be exterminated Hitler's guiding inspiration.

Worshiping at the alter of his puffed up Empire fetishness, and glorious shit faced eyes.
White Canadians revere MacDonald as something glorious. Even his constant shitfaced existence.

Well, who are we then?

Those 3 documents we claim as Canadians values antithetical to everything Macdonald was?

I fear the answer is NO.

The last 3 days answered loudly who we are.
We're still Don Cherry's Canada.

We're Macdonald's Canada.

Two faced racists who say what we need to say to be proper and righteous.

But have no particular problem or even minimal historical curiosity with this:
We're the white Canadians who sat contentedly idle for decades - forever - as police beat and murdered Indigenous people and black and brown Canadians in plain sight every day.

*Because we approved*

Perhaps I read too much FB but I'm not convinced we're not still those people.
We're the gay white Canadians - I confess I was once one of them - who angrily condemned Black Lives Matter for daring to *interfear* with *our* precious parade!

We found like cause with hating and banning police only bc a serial killer happened.

But we called it "allyship".
We're the white Canadians who say "Black Lives Matter!" But listen carefully. A hollow conditional sound to it. Even today.

Police murdered an innocent teen in a hail of bullets on a streetcar.

They beat a teen with a pipe. Took out his eye and covered it up w/ lies.

We did..
