It might be time to remove semi-automatic weapons from law enforcement on patrol and return to .38 revolvers. At the same time make shooting or killing a cop a federal offense. The latter, punishable by death. Maintain SWAT teams for scenarios involving heavily armed individuals.

I remember the push for arming police better in NY. It began when James Dixon York and Anthony Laborde used 9 mm’s to kill one cop and wound another mere walking distance from my home in 1981. I’ve noticed the sheer volume of shots used in “subduing” unarmed perpetrators and its’s excessive. Cops have a right to protect themselves but discharging multiple rounds on and in perpetrators unable to fire back is egregious, if not criminal.

By making killing a cop a federal offense punishable by death it changes a lot, and I believe will reduce risk for police officers. There are already laws on the books for lesser crimes that allow the Feds to step in. Such as possession of an illegal firearm by a felon.
