Can I fault these "students" lack of understanding when adults have been misusing irony for the last thirty years? "Ironically, the pitcher and batter hail from the same town." That's not even ironic if they grew up across the street from on another.

It's a coincidence. Irony is unexpected. Now if the pitcher's sister just got engaged to the batter and he kills him with a beaner, then that's ironic. And if the pitcher's father beaned and killed the batter's father a decade before, then that's irony writ large.

Ironically, I proof read this thread and still misspelled a three-letter word. It should be "one another" instead of "on another."
