Wife & I watched a 1971 Dick Cavett Show last night. Mayor Carl Stokes of Cleveland & William Ruckelshaus. Big discussion on when White America quit being aspirational and embraced ignorance as a virtue. I thought sonewhere in the late 70's She thought the early 90's. 1/
Regardless, it happened.
People used to want more for their children. They wanted to better themselves, too. Now, at least in popular culture, eloquence, thoughtfulness, logic, and nuance are actively denigrated.
Knowledge for its own sake is mocked as a fool's game. 2/
"Why would I ever need to know any of this!!??!!" Is the refrain I get from my own kid, who has grown up in a culture where actually knowing shit is given zero respect or value.
It's just sad. Because you can see from shows like this how badly our country has suffered for it. 3/3
