The #Tübingen Institute of Classical Archaeology has just put online (OA) a small series of photographs taken by an anonymous German tourist to Italy shortly after 1906 and recently donated to our collection. (1/5)

The series focuses on archaeological sites, but includes some ethnographic detail like this street scene in Bologna (Palazzo della Mercanzia) or washerwomen in a lavatoio inside Syracus’ ancient stone quarries. (2/5)
Unusual motifs include Rome’s Arco di Druso and the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II. during its construction. (3/5)
Two shots showing cold lava streams obstructing the town of Boscotrecase and the piazza in front of its S. Anna church allow to date the series to the years following Vesuvius’ eruption of April 1906 (cf. a contemporary postcard).
The photographer (not an expert!) labelled most of his negatives; in this case he provides us but with a generic indication. Perhaps @pompei79, @raylaurence1 or somebody else on #PompejiTwitter can provide me with a more specific indication? Thanks! (5/5)
