I'd like to share something about this. Standard practice for NGO petitions is to put money into targeted facebook ads to push them to people FB know have an interest in the issue. Everybody does it, because it's a more reliably effective way achieving reach than anything else 1/ https://twitter.com/crisortunity/status/1301072408426799104
But here we are running a campaign that is challenging the role of advertising per se in fuelling the climate crisis, which in a very real sense is predominantly a crisis of over-consumption in rich nations. 2/
Add in the horrific, unconscionable and extremely pivotal role of FB in the anglosphere's decay into post-truth alt-fascism, and there was simply no way the practice of paid FB ads could be countenanced for this campaign. 3/n
The very idea of paying FB to promote this petition jarred like a rusty fork scraping against our teeth. All of which means we are completely reliant on 'organic' reach for this petition. This means we need YOU to share it with your contacts. 4/n
The worst possible outcome for my own mental wellbeing from this experiment would be to prove that online petitions cannot succeed without handing lots of charitable funds to facebook. Please help avert this outcome https://e-activist.com/page/66459/petition/1 Thank you! 5/ends
