But here we are, five years later, and the government is encouraging public fears of people invading our shores is a diversion from other political issues, including the faltering Brexit negotiations and criticism of the government’s response to COVID-19.

Today, as we remember Aylan Kurdi, we should remember that we must always look beyond the headlines, to see the humans at the heart of the story.
