In a summer in which the Prime Minister had called asylum seekers a ‘swarm’, and mainstream newspaper columnists said they would want to use gunships to deter people making treacherous journeys, the photograph of Aylan Kurdi changed the conversation.

But here we are, five years later, and the government is encouraging public fears of people invading our shores is a diversion from other political issues, including the faltering Brexit negotiations and criticism of the government’s response to COVID-19.

Today, as we remember Aylan Kurdi, we should remember that we must always look beyond the headlines, to see the humans at the heart of the story.
