Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon)

This means the Principle place , a place from which you can see for miles and can be seen from miles. But it has a second meaning , that being 'tomb' a 'Gwyddfa' . The mountain was once home to Rhitta gawr ( Rhitta the giant)
Rhitta gawr was a ferocious individual and over time killed a series of Kings in his quest to become the king of the Britons. Each time he killed a king he stole their beards to make a cloak for himself. 28 kings were killed until he met his match. None other than King Arthur
The brenin Arthur and Rhitta gawr met at the summit of the highest mountain in Wales where they were involved in bloody battle, the power of Arthurs superior sword 'Caledfwlch' (excalibur) lead to his victory and Rhitta was entombed on the Mountain in a Gwyddfa
The summit itself is often referred to as Carnedd y Cawr ....the Giants cairn
