Every Wednesday night as a kid my Mum and Dad would go out and my Nan Nan would come and babysit. It was the only time of the week we watched ITV. We watched Coronation Street (I liked spotting the cat on the wall) and then ‘This is your Life’ with Eamonn Andrews.
Some weeks we got lucky and my Nan would recognise the celebrity and tell me who they were, most weeks, we didn’t, and my Nan Nan would shout ‘Never heard of them!’
These were mostly writers or classical composers or musicians, not a clue.
But this didn’t matter, because they knew who they were and someone watching did and by the end of the programme my Nan was always crying at the final guest who was usually the celebrity’s old primary school teacher or their new born baby.
I have two points here, firstly ‘This is your life’ is surely due a reboot
And secondly, as @bbcstrictly and @imacelebrity get announced it reminds me that just because I don’t know someone it doesn’t mean they aren’t known
It just means they aren’t in my cultural frame of reference, they can’t be known by everyone.
I’ll get to know them and by the end I won’t remember that when they first stepped out I shouted ‘Never heard of them!’ just like my Nan.
And if you’ve never seen ‘This is your Life’ it was amazing and the theme tune was everything
