I spent my 20s struggling. When I say struggling, I mean struggling. I saw every side of it. And one thing I’ve realized is that you have to make a decision yourself for when you want to stop struggling. If you don’t consciously make it, you will never escape the struggle.
The next question is how. Okay, I’ll be truthful, the “how” looks different for everyone. For me, my main stressor was work. I was traveling so much & felt underpaid for that stress so I decided to leave my job & build a business that gives me flexibility.
After I started my business, another struggle. Steady income. I remember one day just sitting down in the train crying out of frustration. Anyway, I put pen to paper on how much I would need to earn monthly to feel comfortable. I believe the figure I put down was $10k or so.
PS: I live in America. My bills are in dollars. Please do not translate that amount into your local currency. It will not make sense. For me, in my personal circumstances that’s what I felt I needed bare minimum. So I got to work.
Having that figure on hand was very helpful to me because it kept me in check. It also took maybe 2/3 months to hit that goal. But once I did, it afforded me resources to buy time (hire people). I used that time to create digital information products.
I of course earn more from my day job than my info products but doing that gave me something very valuable - options. I no longer felt under pressure because I had an alternative source of income.
And that peace of mind had a tremendous impact on how I ran my business.
For eg
I no longer took jobs out of desperation. I had time to go out & look for good business. In Feb we signed on one of the biggest Accelerators in the US as clients. By March, we signed on a US University. If I was still in struggle phase, I won’t have been able to pursue those.
As I mentioned in the beginning of this, everyone’s “how” is different. This was my own journey.
TL:DR -
1. Make up your mind to leave struggle phase.
2. Set actual targets
3. Give yourself options
I write a personal development newsletter where I share more about my process. Next week, I’ll be sharing more details on the exact figures I make from my side hustles and how.
