Mainland students in Hong Kong were regular targets of ironically authoritarian-like encroachments on their privacy, with many being demanded to hand over their phones to have their chat history searched by HK students. https://twitter.com/DanielDumbrill/status/1191749176196861952?s=19
Last year was a pretty rough year in terms of xenophobic attacks at the hands of "peaceful" Hong Kong protesters in their version of a "free" society. It looks like the good folks at the HKU Student Union are trying to bring back a bit of that "glory" back to Hong Kong this year.
Last year I helped a mainland friend move back to Shenzhen from Hong Kong and gave Shenzhen international school advice to born and raised HKers who were also fed up of the local "freedom fighters". Generally speaking you're safer speaking out against the protesters as a foreigner, but if you push your free speech a little too much, they'll try to get you too. Some of them even post pictures of my kids and ask how their doing... https://twitter.com/DanielDumbrill/status/1283565512354443264?s=19
You're certainly not safe as a local HKer speaking out against these "peaceful" protesters. https://twitter.com/DanielDumbrill/status/1253130182031884288?s=19
This old local HK lady who had enough luckily didn't get beat up, the "peaceful" protesters were happy enough trying to blind her with green lasers. https://twitter.com/DanielDumbrill/status/1258548148252729344?s=19

CUHK students are a bit more resourceful when it comes to producing the equipment essential for peaceful protesting though. https://twitter.com/DanielDumbrill/status/1194461927918821378?s=19
