President Muhammadu Buhari, a Villain or Hero in the North?
Thread.
There's a very popular narrative among a large population of Northern Nigerians that PMB has been neglecting his very own kind when it comes to projects and development in his administration.
I find that notion to be scathingly unfair, prejudice and very misleading.
Not only is PMB not neglecting the North at all, the Great Man is in fact not putting any zone ahead of any other in terms of projects and development.
All projects under PMB are spread equally among the six geopolitical zones, and that's a fact:
1. To begin with, the finest of them all; The AKK Gas Pipeline is PMB's most prudent project yet and a foresightful investment for Nigeria.
Cutting across 5 Northern states, the $2.8bn investment will result in the establishment of a connecting pipeline netwrk between the Eastern
, western and northern regions of Nigeria.

It aims to create a steady and guaranteed gas supply network between the northern and southern parts of Nigeria by utilising the country’s widely available gas resources.
2. The Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Station, is a 3,050 MW hydroelectric power project under development in Nigeria. When completed, it will be the largest power-generating installation in the country, and one of the largest hydroelectric power stations in Africa.
FEC has already approved the $5.6bn dollar project, paid fully the 15% counterpart funding. This will realistically be completed in 2030.
3. Estimated to cost $1.3bn, Zungeru is the biggest hydropower project under construction in Nigeria. It is also one of the biggest power projects in Africa to avail preferential loan facility from the Export-Import Bank (Exim Bank) of China.
4. Roads: 23 of the 44 roads funded by the SUKUK bonds are located in the North with North Central and East getting 8 each and 7 to North West.
₦70bn of ₦155bn has been paid to the contractors for the construction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano expressway.
Although the most frustrating plight for many of us in the North, I strongly believe PMB will deliver this for us no matter when.
5. Railways:
The Abuja-Kaduna SGR albeit inherited by erstwhile administration, it's worth noting that PMB procured all the trains and commissioned the railway in 2016.
The Abuja light rail has also been completed and operation to follow this year.
A whopping $614m counterpart funding has been paid by PMB for the kick-off of the Kaduna-Kano rail line which will be completed in 2023, hopefully.
6. NEDC:
This program, if managed and supervised appropriately will make a big difference and might go down as Buhari's biggest legacy in Northern Nigeria.
PMB established the North East Development Commission in 2017 to help develop and improve the crippled region,
over ₦100bn has been transferred to the commission since 2019.
The commission is to execute 224 developmental projects in 112 Local government areas across the six North-East states.
The Commission also set aside a maximum funding of N50 million as intervention for each of the 112 local government areas.
The Managing Director said the commission has also earmarked N6 billion to replenish the 10% annual grants on scholarship for students in the region.
👏👏👏
7. Dry Port:
PMB has successfully constructed 3 Dry Ports in Northern Nigeria to boost the economical drive of the region and exportation of farm produce. The Jos and Funtua In land dry ports will commence operation soon, am not sure when but The Kaduna in land dry port
was commissioned in 2018 and has been very operational since.
The dry port is first of it's kind anywhere in Nigeria and is expected to,inter alia, create 20,000 jobs, estimated to generate no fewer than 5000 direct employment, receive cargo from Apapa Port in Lagos.
8. PMB, through NSIA has invested US$5m on the Diagnostic Center in the
Aminu Kano University Teaching Hospital with the rationale of uprgrading the Diagnostic center to world class standard.
It's expected work will be done early in 2021.
9. Housing:
PMB's national housing program has seen over 1,094 houses completed in 34 states of the country and about 3,000 under construction at the different stages.
There is this program in each and every one of the Northern states including FCT.
10. The following is very tricky but justified when explained in details:
If you look very closely at the break down of PMB's $22.7bn loan plan that has already been approved by NASS, you'll find out that about $4.47bn will be spent in the South alone,
$6.7bn will be spent in the North alone. The remaining $11.53bn will be spent on or across the country.
Fair? I'm not sure but certainly no injustice to the North.
I'll stop here for now.
I might have said many things wrong above, said the wrong figures or exaggerated a little but I certainly didn't make up any of those. All are legit tangible and facts. I'm very open to correction as the same time ready to solidify all I said with facts.
I'm not at all perturbed by seeing criticism or insults thrown at the President but nothing tick me off like the infamous phrase "Buhari bai damu da Arewa ba".
Baba Buhari has always and will always, to quote the Great Man, "Belongs to Nobody, belongs to everybody".
The above mentioned projects/programs are the few efforts I can remember now of President Muhammad Buhari to develop Northern Nigeria like he's doing with all the regions in the country.
