As ed systems around world re-open schools, many countries have implemented smaller class sizes but not all. Major issue with #OntEd #BackToSchool plan is @fordnation @Sflecce are being disingenuous in saying smaller classes & physical distancing will be possible across #OntEd /1
The class sizes regulation & teacher:student funding formula haven’t been changed by govt. This is what drives class size requirements. While designated boards are to have cohorts of 15 secondary students, this doesn’t apply to majority of boards who’ll have regular class sizes/2
In all school boards, elementary school classes remain regular sizes. Impact of opt out for online is contributing to collapsed classes &, in some cases, split grades. @Sflecce can say $$$ for staffing but unless mandating smaller class sizes, this won’t happen across #OntEd /3
I’d prefer govt was honest & said current reality is regular/large class sizes in elementary in all boards & in secondary in non-designated boards with challenges for physical distancing. Then it’s clear for families & public, instead of constant spin & different reality /4
Better still actually mandate small class sizes for all grades, all schools with changed teacher:student funding ratio to make this happen & to enable adequate physical distancing. Because #SmallerIsSafer @OntarioSafe
#OntEd #SafeSeptember #OnPoli @msiggerslibrary
/End.
I should add some boards are trying to find ways to reduce class sizes eg in high risk communities, but this really should be something the govt enables & funds provincially.
