Teachers and the ATA have never advocated for reducing class sizes by half (to 15). What we would like to see are more resources and supports provided to school divisions and principals so they can reduce the size of our largest classes. /1
Let's review our reasonable 7 Priorities for Successful and Safe Re-entry to Schools (it's number 4 btw). Imagine reducing classes so that teachers could remove an entire row out of their rooms. It would create a better chance for physical distancing. /2

Respondents to our polling indicated that their largest classes will be between 30 to 40 plus students. The government owes it to these students, their parents and teachers to create the best possible scenario for their safety. That's your responsibility. /3
Polling also indicates that 64% of Albertans feel the plans should for re-opening should be improved through funding to reduce class sizes. Federal dollars would have addressed this as it is a concern by parents, students, and all school staff. /4
I cannot seem to say this enough, teachers want to be at school, with their students, doing what they love, but they want it to be safe. I am deeply concerned Government would dismiss the concerns of teachers and parents around class size during a pandemic. It's shameful really.
