My grandfather passed away a couple months ago at the ripe old age of 86. But in 1990, he put a bunch of stuff in a box for me and sealed it. I’m going to open it now and share this magic with you. It’s time for the #GrandpaTimeCapsule friends.
It’s important to note that my grandpa was an avid junk collector. He spent his free time at garage sales and flea markets, just buying everything. His basement was like a museum...of junk. And right off the rip, I can see some plastic “Presidential Coins.” #GrandpaTimeCapsule
First, we appear to have this joke left by grandpa. His grammar wasn’t great—he only had a 6th grade education. He had to start working in/around the mines in Harlan, KY after that. This is a surprisingly good gag from an otherwise serious man. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Next up, in an opened envelope is a letter from Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. My grandpa was a hardcore Christian—a Pentecostal. Includes a “signed” pic of their children for some reason. Bakker now sells buckets of food to gullible people. Ask @VicBergerIV #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Two McDonald’s Fun Times magazines from 1982. They do not actually appear to be fun, but when I opened one it had a how-to for a time capsule. So that’s pretty weird. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
And it’s...more Jim Bakker crap. This time a magazine! Crazy to think about how much money this crook likely swindled out of my grandpa. Includes an ad which asks, “Does a Woman Need a Will?” Yikes. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
10 postcards of San Francisco. These are pretty cool. No idea how old they are, but look fairly old. I’m guessing photos are from the ‘40s. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Definitely the coolest thing, so far. War era envelopes and matching stationary. They have some cool propaganda art (and one horrifically racist one). Notice the 48 states! #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Here’s a grim magazine published by Cox Newspapers in 1982, talking about nuclear proliferation in the Cold War. It’s pretty amazing. But also found this sheet of Boys Town stamps/seals from 1956 tucked inside. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
A National Geographic poster about the space program from 1973. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Cool! Star Wars and ESB story books! And also....the story of Winston Churchill. Alright, then. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Not one, not two, but NINE one-sheets for Disney’s THE BLACK HOLE (1979). Why? I have absolutely no idea. Neither the Beaver Valley (yes, that’s right) or Salem Mall theaters still exist. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
My grandpa knew I loved the @Reds. I’ve been a fan my entire life. Here’s a 1988-89 Team Calendar. The good ol’ days at Riverfront. Pete Rose was busted for gambling that August. The Reds went on to win the Series in ‘90. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
A Little Wonder Records 5 1/2” gramophone record. “No. 1075, Amoureuse.” This label made records between 1914 and 1923. Definitely the oldest thing in here, so far. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Two Star Trek: The Motion Picture souvenir programs. These are pretty rad. My grandpa loved movies, and he really liked Star Trek films. We used to watch them on laserdisc at his house (he was really into laserdisc for some reason). #GrandpaTimeCapsule
A little pouch of Durham tobacco, including a pack of rolling papers. Damn, gramps, I already quit.

But I’ll try out the rolling papers.
#GrandpaTimeCapsule
Whoa, cool. Three Dell comics from 1953-1957. You might ask yourself, why did Jungle Jim dare to hunt the twenty-toed elephant? Why, that’s TWO more toes than normal!!

Jungle Jim sounds like an asshole.
#GrandpaTimeCapsule
Wow, a complete @USATODAY from July 4, 1985. I may spend a couple tweets on this because there is some interesting stuff in here. I love how “Everybody in Mill City Loves Parade” is a genuine cover story for a national paper. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Some things never change: an article talking about excessive heat (we weren’t talking about climate change then) causing California wildfires. 😢 #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Apparently, @KelloggsUS ran a crowdsourcing campaign in ‘85 to save the Statue of Liberty. Then they published everyone’s names in the paper. Is this the first @kickstarter? There’s pages of names. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
There is an amazing graph charting public opinion on issues. The declining support for abortion choice is notable. Also, a guy in Dayton (my town!) calling out a bigot (hell yeah!) and WINE COOLERS ARE HOT #GrandpaTimeCapsule
GEORGE A. DILLMAN, KARATE MASTER #GrandpaTimeCapsule
An issue of Dayton Daily News’ TV Date Book, from 1981. Cover of the Fonz, long after he jumped the shark. Cheap Trick was playing Hara Arena (RIP) and...well, it’s a look at Dayton’s history of adult cinemas and drive-ins.
Some really weird Star Trek art? I have no idea what this is. Two punched holes at the top. Confident my grandpa didn’t paint this. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
A book chronicling the 1974 tornadoes which devastated the area and essentially leveled Xenia, Ohio. Pretty fascinating, especially the pictures. Also there two very nicely printed photos of Apollo 11 (and Nixon) tucked inside. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
A brief break for dinner. There’s....a lot left. Hopefully this isn’t boring haha #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Alright. Back at it. And WOW, I think I might try and frame these. Two huge full-page newspaper prints of my all-time favorite baseball player, the legend @JohnnyBench_5. Thanks for these, grandpa. Awesome. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
What I’ve always wanted! A 1984 Sears Men’s Big and Tall catalog featuring @RealJoeNamath! As you might imagine, there is no way I’m passing up a chance to check out this important, historic tome. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
LADIES...we heard you’re into the longest underwear crotches in the universe? #GrandpaTimeCapsule
ANDY, YOU GOONIE!!! #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Ok, I swear this is the last one. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Books! Charlie Brown, Gentle Ben, Dennis the Menace, Bionic Man (?)
But tucked inside, this little slip of paper. My grandma worked in an envelope factory. Looks like gramps took an inspection slip and wrote “book marker” on it. I really do miss them. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Three (why) copies of the 1983 Ronald McDonald Space Explorer Coloring Calendar—with “magic rub n’ discover spots.” I, too, have magic rub n’ discover spots. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
You just know I had to rub n discover. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Wow. Can’t believe what I rubbed n discovered. #GrandpaTimeCapsule #ImSorry
Trading cards! A seriously large amount of rad Star Wars cards...and a handful of Sgt Pepper’s trading cards? I mean, who doesn’t want George Burns on a trading card? #GrandpaTimeCapsule
There’s a decent stack of baseball and football cards, too. This 1977 card showing the 1976 Reds NL Championship win is cool, though. #GrandpaTimeCapsule
Some Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars....and a losing contest ticket from Ponderosa Steakhouse? 🤷‍♂️ #GrandpaTimeCapsule
