September is the Global spinal cord injury awareness month. I am Zahra Ali, I sustained GCT (giant cell tumor) at the C7-T1 level of the spinal cord. It led to an impairment in motor or sensory function of the lower extremities. This is one of the types of a spinal cord injury.
Every year, approximately 500 000 people suffer from spinal cord injuries (SCI) around the world. However, it's unfortunate that in Pakistan, there are no statistics related to the number of SCI patients.
My question is why not? Many people suffer from spinal traumas but there is no proper system of rehabilitation. The SCI doesn't always result in disabilities, it has many other complications.
I am sure, you also know someone who might have faced a spinal cord injury but couldn't really rehabilitate. This month, I hope we raise our voice for these people who silently suffer the pain and neglect.
Please share this and use the hashtag #SCIAWARENESSMONTH to at least add a little voice to create a cry that might bring a positive change in Pakistan, and worldwide.
