Let’s talk about the real violence happening to homeless ppl. Let’s talk about SAFETY. I hear these words SAFETY from ppl living inside and I think “have you ever had to live outside?” “Who’s really unsafe?!”.
I ran in to a young woman today who is homeless who is staying at the Roehampton. While waiting to get checked in, she was across the street and fell asleep, a neighbor poured a bucket of ice water on her. This is VIOLENCE.
Last night police went to Moss Park and brutalized Black Men who live in the park. Destroyed their tents, beat people up. Cuffed everyone and let them go after destroying their homes. The VIOLENCE Black homeless ppl are subjected to is next level and there is no recourse.
Police can do whatever, whenever with no oversight. Especially to Black people, especially to Indigenous people, especially to people who use drugs all living outside. When the City says it’s broke, it needs to look no further then the police budget. Defunding police is a solution
And ppl in neighborhoods like Midtown they feel empowered to target homeless ppl moved in to the Roehampton. They feel JUSTIFIED to dehumanize ppl and blame them for all SOCIAL PROBLEMS. The ppl being subjected to this hate have no recourse, no platform.
Meanwhile yesterday was a hell day for many ppl who are living in anguish trying to survive while their ppl around them die of preventable deaths. Where’s the housing? Where’s the emergency response? Wheres the mayor encampment tours? Where’s the end to police brutality?
So when ppl use terms like SAFETY. Who’s safety are you privileging? Who’s really the most UNSAFE? We need to prioritize the ppl who are living outside. They are being subjected to hate, racism, material deprivation, discrimination, police brutality and deep state neglect.
SSHA, Fire, Streets to Homes, paramedics, corporate security, police, parks ambassadors were in the parks today doing “welfare checks”. You know what they didn’t offer them? Housing.A shelter hotel. Food/water. Nothing!!!!! Ppl have been waiting months.

Is this safety?
