🍀🎹 KAEDE AKAMATSU &
NAGITO KOMAEDA 🎹🍀

i'm ready to SUFFER & i'm ready
to HOPE -- it's a shot in the dark
aimed right at my THROAT
when comparing sdr2 and ndrv3, people often talk about komaeda & ouma as if they're parallels of each other. however, this (in my opinion, incorrect) comparison seems to be based entirely in their shared role as the protagonist's rival, but that's for a different thread.
what i think is a far more interesting comparison is komaeda & akamatsu which many people might question how i even got there in the first place.

this brings me to my first proposal of the thread: the general danganronpa fandom does not know how to do character analysis and it's
clear in their treatement of almost every character in the series.
as in all fandoms, characters are reduced down to memes and one-liners and no depth beyond that which is fine UNTIL it reaches the point that it has here where it's basically impossible to properly talk about characters like komaeda in an analytical sense without someone bringing
needlessly dark fanon into it.
so, to start off, here are some basic facts about nagito komaeda that are canonical and easily read if you pay attention.
nagito komaeda cares very deeply about his friends and the world around him (this is ESPECIALLY clear if you watch the ova please god watch the ova i'm BEGGING you).
he is self sacrificial (and also willing to sacrifice others lol) to a fault, willing to give himself up for what he thinks is the greatest cause of all.
he is both optimistic and pessimistic, believing that hope is always around the corner while also believing that despair follows after.
he believes in his friends above everything else, to a fault.
now this also brings to mind another character.
one who also is very kind and cares very deeply for their friends and the world.
one who also has a cause worth endangering themself and dying over.
one who believes so much in a bright future and they're willing to assume the worst & act on that feeling.
one who also believes in their friends more than anything.
i think it's very important to observe characters outside of the perspective a piece of media gives you and just look at who they are at their core.
so much can get lost when you get stuck in the framework a piece of media might want you to and it is so worth it to dig beyond surface level.
komaeda and akamatsu are such wonderfully layered and interesting characters and i hope this thread gave you a bit more insight into them and encouraged you to read a bit deeper into others as well!
