What I love about this ~cute~ new trend is that on January 3, 2020 a US drone strike illegally murdered Qassem Soleimani, and I spent the rest of January in a state of fear and panic that my country of birth, the US, was about to invade the country of my family, Iran. https://twitter.com/austinnotduncan/status/1300670417787473920
January felt low-key traumatic for me. I witnessed people joking online about being drafted to fight in Iran and about raping Iranian women, I witnessed my father and family's silent inquietude while watching the news and feeling powerless.
And then the worst pandemic in recent history hit. I guess just don't assume what other people are going through and be thankful for everything you have and hold dear.
