It's officially been
one year
since I joined @TexasMonthly full-time, so to celebrate, here's a quick recap of some of the stories I'm proudest of. First off: The Lion Tamer. I cannot describe how amazing it was to see my grandpa's story in print. https://bit.ly/3bgKf1W

The @AngryTiasRGV are a force to be reckoned with in the Valley, so I went down to Brownsville to write about the work they do after seeing it first-hand. https://bit.ly/3jBqo0e
Last year, young Latinas across Texas partnered up with @JoltAction to turn their quinceañeras into voter registration events. I went to Maya's quince in Dallas and heard from about the importance of the Latino vote https://bit.ly/34PbjUS
2019 was the year of @lizzo, and I had tons of fun tracing back her Houston roots, her rise to fame, talking to her early collaborators and even her old @AliefISD band director. https://bit.ly/3gQnhzI
In October I did my first photo story about the conchero dancers of Austin whose traditions, headdresses, and regalia survived centuries of colonization. https://bit.ly/2EG5Tku
One of my favorite stories centered around the history of Black cowboys in Texas, and introduced me to the Prairieview Trailridersâthe oldest Black trail riding group in the state. https://bit.ly/2QLrEl6
In March, I spoke w/ @RAICESTEXAS lawyers who were sounding alarms (and still are) about the poor preparedness of detention centers against COVID outbreaks. Today, TX has 180 detainees w/ confirmed cases & almost 2000 have tested positive since March. https://bit.ly/2EZUkUI
I crossed off a bucket list interview when I spoke with @itsSHANGELA, a true drag/Texas icon and professional. https://bit.ly/3hVIPN2
It's been a wild 365 days & even though I do have a complicated relationship with Texas, it's the only place I've ever called home. I'm so happy that I've been able to write about the communities that have always been integral to this state's story. Can't wait to share more
