September 1, 1980 - Near Thunder Bay

After 18 miles of running, Terry suddenly can't breathe. He gets in the van and asks to be taken to hospital. An x-ray reveals a lump the size of a golf ball in Terry's lung.

It was the end of the Marathon of Hope.
Addendum: September 2, 1980

The next day, as Terry flew home to BC for treatment, students returned from school after Labour Day. Thousands of classrooms across Canada wrote letters of support to Terry. (Photos from Douglas Coupland's "Terry")
September 7: A star-studded CTV telethon raises $10-million for the Marathon, eclipsing Terry's original dream of the Marathon raising $1-million total.

September 18: Terry becomes the youngest recipient of the Order of Canada.
To date, $800-million has been raised for cancer research in Terry Fox's name.
