Brandy was such the champ last night. And people really hate that.
The cultural, critical, and commercial legacy of Brandy is *actually* paramount. It’s not made up in someone’s head. It publicly cited and documented. And people who don’t fuck with her, don’t fuck with that.
What Brandy accomplished in the first 5 years of her career is truly insane. But then Full Moon & Afrodisiac happened, and totally pivoted her artistry into one that wasn’t only adored but now EMULATED.
I saw some busted ass opinion saying “they think she’s Aretha or something,” which is ironic because there are similarities, even down to the “shade.” Brandy is just as influential to her generation and beyond. People hate to hear that but IT IS WHAT IT IS.
Take out Brandy’s work and you don’t get (as we know): Erykah & Baduizm, Britney Spears & Xtina’s debuts, Kelela, Chris Brown, Jazmine Sullivan, Kierra Sheard, Solange, the entire alt-R&B subgenre, Rihanna & GGGB, Frank Ocean, Miguel, John Frusciante (from Red Hot Chili Peppers)
And that’s just her musical work. Issa Rae cites being in the audience for Moesha as the moment she decided wanted to do television. These aren’t fake accounts. Brandy created rippling effects that contribute to culture decades later. And that’s okay, because it’s the truth.
